Happy Friday, friends!
Today I have a super tasty green smoothie recipe for you. Try it for lunch or an early dinner for the perfect start to your weekend.
I call it the Glowing Green Goddess Smoothie because the combination of delicious flavors, energy-boosting ingredients and nutrition superpowers in this green drink will make you glow from the inside out. (And it’s not just for the ladies, men will love it too.)
Here’s what goes in it: baby spinach, romaine, 2 small pears, a small ripe banana, a little avocado, ground flax seeds, coconut water and ice. Blend it for about a minute and you have one large smoothie in 5 minutes. The pears and banana make it sweet without any added sugar, and the avocado makes it creamy.
Why You’ll Love This Green Smoothie
- Sweet, not grassy: Two pears and a ripe banana balance out a big pile of spinach and romaine.
- Creamy without dairy: A couple tablespoons of avocado make it silky and smooth.
- Filling: Ground flax adds fiber and healthy fats, so it holds you over as a light lunch.
- No added sugar: All of the sweetness comes from fruit and coconut water.
Ingredient Notes
Baby Spinach and Romaine
Spinach is the mildest leafy green, so it’s the best one to start with. Romaine adds a fresh, crisp flavor and extra water, which helps everything blend smoothly. Two big handfuls of spinach plus four or five romaine leaves sounds like a lot, but it blends down to nothing.
Pears
Pears are the secret to this smoothie. They’re juicy, sweet and mild, so they sweeten the greens without taking over. Use ripe pears (they should give a little near the stem) and core them, but there’s no need to peel them.
Banana
A small ripe banana adds sweetness and body. If you use a frozen banana, you can cut back on the ice.
Avocado
Just 2 tablespoons makes the texture creamy. Save the rest of the avocado for toast or a salad, or freeze small scoops for future smoothies.
Ground Flax Seeds
Ground flax adds fiber and omega-3 fats. Buy it ground (or grind it yourself), since whole flax seeds tend to pass right through. Store it in the fridge to keep it fresh.
Coconut Water
Coconut water adds a light, natural sweetness. Look for one with no added sugar. Purified water works too if that’s what you have.
Glowing Green Goddess Smoothie Recipe
Makes 1 large serving.
Use organic ingredients whenever possible.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups baby spinach (about 2 large handfuls)
- 4-5 large leaves of romaine lettuce
- 2 small pears, cored and chopped
- 1 small ripe banana, peeled
- 2 tablespoons avocado flesh
- 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
- 1 cup coconut water (or substitute purified water)
- 1 cup ice (about 10 ice cubes)
Method: Wash all produce thoroughly and prepare it for the blender. Blend all ingredients starting on low and working your way up to high until well blended, about 1 minute total. Add more purified water to blend if needed.
How to Make a Green Goddess Smoothie
- Prep the produce: Wash the spinach and romaine, core and chop the pears, and peel the banana.
- Load the blender: Add the coconut water first, then the greens, fruit, avocado, flax and ice. Liquids on the bottom help the blades get going.
- Blend: Start on low and work your way up to high, blending for about 1 minute until it’s completely smooth.
- Adjust: Add a splash of purified water if it’s too thick, then pour and enjoy right away.
Tips for the Best Green Smoothie
- No high-speed blender? Blend the greens with the coconut water first until smooth, then add everything else.
- Make it colder and thicker: Use a frozen banana or frozen pear slices.
- Add protein: A scoop of vanilla protein powder blends right in and makes it more filling.
Storage
This smoothie is best fresh, but you can store it in a jar filled to the very top in the fridge and drink it within 24 hours. Give it a good shake before drinking. Here’s how to save a smoothie for later.

Green Goddess Smoothie FAQs
What’s in a green goddess smoothie?
Every version is a little different, but it always starts with leafy greens. Mine uses baby spinach and romaine with pears, banana, avocado and ground flax, blended with coconut water and ice.
Can I use a different fruit instead of pears?
A green apple is a great swap since it’s also mild and sweet. Just core it first. Mango or pineapple will make the smoothie sweeter and more tropical.
Can I make it without coconut water?
Use purified water instead. The smoothie will be a little less sweet, but the pears and banana still carry it.
Can I use kale instead of spinach?
You can, but kale has a stronger flavor and needs a powerful blender to get smooth. Remove the tough stems and start with one handful.
