Fish Oil Benefits

Have you noticed that fish oil is getting a lot of publicity lately?

Now that nutrition science has debunked the myth that eating healthy fat actually makes you fat, fish oil has proved to be the most effective way to get the EPA and DHA omega-3’s we all need. It seems like everyone from doctors and Health Coaches to beauty magazines and your best friend are talking about it, and every week we hear about a new study confirming that it’s good for you.

This publicity has unleashed a slew of supplements on the market to meet demand.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that people are becoming more health-conscious and interested in supporting their diet with supplements, however…

Not all fish oil supplements are created equal!

Many fish oil supplements contain heavy metals, PCB’s, and other contaminants, or they are not properly prepared and go rancid quickly. This can actually do more harm than good. Yuck.

I’ll share you with the one that I take personally but let’s get clear on a few basics first.

Your body is able produce some of the fatty acids it needs to survive, but there are some fatty acids, specifically omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, that can only be obtained from food. We need omega 3’s and 6’s to carry out a huge range of vital body functions and to help us look and feel our best. To break it down even further, there are three types of omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found in plants, while DHA and EPA are found in animal sources, most prevalently in fatty fish. The body partially converts ALA to EPA and DHA, and it appears that all three types are beneficial to our health. (1)

While our ancestors likely consumed these two types of fats in a 1:1 ratio, the modern diet has tipped the balance of this ratio so that most people consume an abundance of omega-6 fats in the form of common grains and oils, and not enough omega-3 fats, which are found in fatty fish and some plant-based foods. This imbalance is a problem that exacerbates disease, depression, chronic pain, and lots of other health issues you probably don’t want (and shouldn’t have) to deal with.

Along with a healthy diet, consuming fish oil regularly can help balance numerous bodily functions (2). Eating two to three servings of low-mercury containing fish each week is a great way to get fish oil, but in reality most people find that difficult to work into their meal plans and eating habits every single week.

To put that in perspective, here are just some of the potential benefits a good quality fish oil supplement (3):

  1. Reduce overall inflammation, which is the underlying cause of ALL diseases.
  2. Improve blood pressure and heart health, as well as arterial function and blood flow – especially for middle-aged adults.
  3. Help to regulate digestion and increase the absorption of vitamins and minerals.
  4. Balance mood swings and decreases depression, so you’re more likely to feel emotionally at ease.
  5. Give you healthy, shiny, and strong hair and nails.
  6. Nourish the skin in countless ways, from cellular rejuvenation and hydration to reducing acne, wrinkles, and the effects of sun damage. Fish oil will help give you a youthful glow.
  7. Improve memory and cognitive function, so your mind is able to think and recall more clearly.
  8. Enhance the function of the entire immune system.
  9. Boost your energy and helps maintain an even pace of energy release.
  10. Improve joint health and reduces stiffness.

How to choose the best quality fish oil

It’s not that we need the omega-3’s in fish oil sometimes, we need them often and consistently to get the health benefits it provides. Taking a high-quality fish oil supplement is a simple (and budget-friendly) way to get adequate amounts of fish oil into your body. Taking a good quality fish oil supplement will ensure that you’re getting the right nutrients in the right amounts.

The one that I personally take every day is USANA’s BiOmega.

Why this specific brand? It contains a concentrated dose of the two Omega-3 fats we need – EPA and DHA – plus vitamin D which is another nutrient over 90% of people are deficient in. It is also double-distilled and purified to be virtually free of contaminants, which is so important. I do my research into the companies that create these kinds of supplements and I like knowing that USANA has a team of scientists making sure no pollution enters my body.

If you’d like to try it, you can order USANA’s BiOmega at a discount through my distributor account here. Just select “Preferred Customer” in the dropdown of the checkout page to automatically receive 10% off of retail. If you know another USANA Independent Distributor, please use their distributor account to purchase.

To your health!
