This vanilla almond protein smoothie tastes like cake batter.
Every now and again I make something that’s so darn good I can hardly believe it’s good for me. This is one of those times. Definitely one of those times.
To make it, blend 16 ounces of water, a serving of vanilla protein powder, 1 frozen banana, 2 heaping tablespoons of almond butter, a splash of vanilla, 1 teaspoon of ground flax and a big handful of ice for about 60 seconds. It makes one big smoothie in 5 minutes.
This healthy protein smoothie tastes like vanilla cake batter and is perfect for either breakfast or a post-workout snack.
The flavor will depend on the brand and type of protein powder and other ingredients that you use, so I’ll tell you what I use below. In general, always look for high-quality and mindfully sourced ingredients without artificial colors, flavors or fillers.

I like this vegan vanilla protein drink from USANA (click here to use my link for 10% off) and I like the Thorne whey protein powder (I get it on Thrive Market, here’s my partner link for 40% off your first purchase.)
This smoothie gets a little extra fiber from ground flax and (optional) psyllium husk. Learn more about why we need the extra fiber and grab another smoothie recipe here.
Cake Batter Protein Smoothie FAQs
Can I use almond milk instead of water?
Almond milk makes it even creamier and more milkshake-like. Swap it in for some or all of the water. Unsweetened is best, since the banana and protein powder already add sweetness.
What kind of protein powder works best?
Any vanilla protein powder you like the taste of, vegan or whey. The flavor of the smoothie really depends on it, so look for one with simple ingredients and no artificial colors, flavors or fillers.
Can I use a different nut butter?
Cashew butter keeps that mild, sweet cake batter flavor, and peanut butter works too, though it will taste more like peanut butter. For a peanut butter version, try my Peanut Butter Split Smoothie.
