Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie recipe

Sometimes a deliciously creamy smoothie like this Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie is exactly what you need to get you through the day.

It basically tastes like a milkshake! But It’s way better for you.

While I also love a Simple Blueberry Smoothie or a non-dairy Strawberry Banana Smoothie, adding yogurt to a smoothie ups the protein, which keeps you full for longer and adds naturally-occurring probiotics to your meal.

The strawberry yogurt smoothie is exactly what it sounds like—there aren’t a lot of ingredients and it’s simple to make. Really, it’s the perfect go-to whenever you or your family members are feeling something sweet. On top of all that, it comes together in about 5 minutes.

Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 8-10 fresh or frozen strawberries
  • a banana, fresh or frozen, broken into chunks (use fresh if your strawberries are frozen, and frozen if your strawberries are fresh—see my tips below)
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt or plain coconut yogurt
  • peanut butter or almond butter or chia seeds (optional, for creaminess, flavor, and protein)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of honey if your strawberries aren’t super sweet
  • water or unsweetened oat milk, nut milk, or regular milk

Whether you’re looking to make a tasty smoothie for yourself or a creamy treat for your kids, you can’t go wrong with this strawberry yogurt smoothie recipe.

The awesome thing about strawberry smoothies is that they’re great for every time of the day. A tasty breakfast, a lunchtime boost, or a dessert for the evening, and it’s packed with health benefits that will keep you from a sugar overload.

How to Make a Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie

  1. Get your ingredients all prepped and into the blender. If you’re using frozen strawberries, you should make sure your blender is up to the task—see my tips about using fresh vs frozen ingredients below. Blend until smooth.
  2. A strawberry yogurt smoothie is best made fresh, but will keep up to 24 hours in the fridge in a glass container with a lid.

Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie Tips

Fresh vs Frozen Strawberries:

  • Fresh strawberries are wonderful in summer. Fresh berries retain the healthy enzymes that can be lost when the berries are frozen. However, fresh berries can be expensive in winter, and frozen berries are still very good for you. I use fresh in the summer and frozen in the cold months.
  • Frozen strawberries are healthy and a great price, especially in winter. Frozen berries are flash-frozen after they’re picked and are still high in nutrients. Large frozen berries can get stuck in your blender blade, so let them thaw for a few minutes or cut them in half to resolve that problem.
  • Add honey to sweeten up your smoothie if your strawberries aren’t super sweet. If your strawberries are sweet, then no need to add honey. It’s up to you.

Fresh vs Frozen Banana Tips:

  • I use a fresh banana if my strawberries are frozen, and a frozen banana if my strawberries are fresh for the best consistency.
  • Never throw away a banana again! When your bananas look like they might over-ripen, peel them and break them into chunks then store them in a freezer bag in the freezer for smoothies.
  • If you don’t care for bananas in your smoothie, then simply leave them out.

Blending Tips:

  • Your blender will have an easier time if you put your softer ingredients and liquid in first. It might be better to give your strawberries some time to thaw out a little before you start blending just to make sure.
  • If you’re planning to make an extra large batch, chop any large strawberries in half to help your blender.

Nutrition

  • This strawberry yogurt smoothie is naturally gluten-free.
  • Make it dairy-free and vegetarian by using coconut (vegan) yogurt.
  • Make this smoothie vegan by using vegan (e.g. coconut) yogurt and leaving out the honey or substituting it with your favorite vegan sweetener.
  • All of the ingredients in this smoothie recipe are packed with nutrients—the health benefits are almost too many to count! Calories will vary depending on the exact ingredients you use. I don’t count calories and don’t think it’s necessary with recipes like this.

Smoothie Storage

If you’ve got some leftovers or want to make a double batch, then it’s perfectly okay to store a smoothie for later.

A Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie will keep for 24 hours in a covered glass container in the fridge.

For the best results, you need to make sure you’re storing your smoothies properly with a tight-fitting lid to prevent oxidation. The more air your smoothie is exposed to, the more quickly it will oxidize and go bad. So, always store your smoothies in an appropriate-sized glass container with a tight-fitting lid.

Aside from oxidation, since this one has yogurt in it, it’s best to have it right away or within 24 hours.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of whole fresh or frozen strawberries. Roughly 8-10 depending on the size
  • 1 medium ripe banana. Peeled and broken up into smaller and more manageable chunks—see my note about the banana below. If you don’t like bananas, leave it out and add another 1/4 cup of yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of nonfat plain Greek yogurt OR coconut yogurt
  • 12 teaspoons of honey depending on how sweet you want it
  • 1 tablespoon of nut butter or seeds for extra fiber and protein—you can use peanut butter, almond butter, chia seeds, or flax seeds. This one’s optional. It really comes down to your preference, but it can add to the creaminess of your smoothie
  • 1.5 cups of unsweetened almond milk (or oat milk, regular milk, or water)

Instructions

  1. Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour into glass and enjoy!
  2. If you have leftovers, store in a glass container with a tight-fitting lid in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Notes

  • For the banana, I like to use fresh bananas if the strawberries are frozen, and frozen bananas if the strawberries are fresh.
