If you’re looking for a quick, zingy pick-me-up to start your morning, look no further than these Honey Ginger Shots.

Made from fresh ginger root, fresh lemon juice, coconut water (or filtered water), honey, and cayenne pepper, these shots pack a lot of flavor into one small sip.

The bold flavors of fresh ginger root and lemon juice are softened by sweet honey and coconut water, making for the perfect balance of flavors.

Making them takes about 10 minutes and no juicer. Blend 1/2 cup of chopped fresh ginger (no need to peel it) with 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 cup of coconut water or filtered water and a pinch of cayenne, then strain it through a fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag. Keep the jar in the fridge for up to 5 days and pour yourself 1 to 2 ounces each morning.

Ginger Shot Benefits

Ginger and lemon both contain antioxidants, coconut water adds natural electrolytes, and the (optional) pinch of cayenne pepper gives it a warming kick.

Health benefits of ginger shots:

  • Ginger has long been used to help ease nausea and bloating.
  • Ginger contains gingerol, a compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Studies have shown that ginger may help ease menstrual pain.
  • Fresh lemon juice adds vitamin C, and the shots are naturally low in sugar.

Ginger is one of the most studied foods out there. A review of 109 randomized controlled trials published by the National Institutes of Health (1) looked at ginger for everything from nausea to fatigue, and easing nausea is where the evidence is strongest.

Often referred to as ginger root, ginger has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, primarily for its incredible ability to settle the stomach.

BTW: Keep in mind that honey ginger shots do not replace medication. If you are on any medications, talk to your healthcare provider about adding anything to your routine. All that to say, I’m not a medical doctor, and you should always work with your healthcare provider for medical needs. Now, let’s make these ginger shots!

Honey Ginger Shots Ingredients

To make honey ginger shots that taste great, you will need the following key ingredients:

  • Fresh ginger root: Using fresh ginger is essential in this recipe, so don’t swap it out for the ground form. Ginger root gives these shots their spicy, warming kick.
  • Fresh lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice adds vitamin C and a bright, tart flavor, which is one reason so many people add lemon juice to their water in the morning. You can substitute with fresh lime juice or fresh orange juice.
  • Coconut water (or filtered water): This adds a subtle sweetness that acts as a brilliant contrast to strong flavors like ginger and lemon juice. Additionally, coconut water has natural electrolytes like potassium.
  • Honey: I like to use Manuka honey, but any minimally processed honey works. It softens the bite of the ginger and lemon.
  • Turmeric (optional): Turmeric adds an earthy flavor and a beautiful golden color to your ginger shots.
  • Cayenne pepper (optional): This ingredient packs a definite flavor punch, which is why we only use it in small amounts. A pinch of cayenne pepper adds a little heat. However, it’s optional, so feel free to leave it out if you aren’t a fan.

How to Make Honey Ginger Shots

To make these Honey Ginger Shots, simply follow these 2 quick steps:

  1. Add the ginger, lemon juice, honey, coconut water, turmeric (if using), and cayenne pepper to a blender or food processor and blend until thoroughly mixed.
  2. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag into a jar and keep covered in your refrigerator up to 5 days. Take one to two ounces each morning. You can also take a ginger shot any time of day if desired.

How to Store Honey Ginger Shots

I recommend storing the ginger juice for your ginger shots in airtight glass jars in the fridge. When stored properly, they will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Ginger Shot FAQs

Are ginger shots good for you?

Ginger has been used for thousands of years to settle the stomach, and it’s rich in antioxidants. A ginger shot is a simple way to get a real dose of fresh ginger, lemon and coconut water. Some ginger supplements do not contain the amount of ginger listed on the bottle, so I prefer to make these at home.

Can you take ginger shots every day?

One a day is plenty for most people. I don’t recommend tossing back ginger shots throughout the day (you could wind up with heartburn), and if you take any medications, check with your healthcare provider first.

Do I need a juicer to make ginger shots?

Not at all. A regular blender does the work, and a fine mesh strainer or nut milk bag catches the pulp. If you like the extra fiber, you can skip straining and drink it as is.

Do I need to peel the ginger?

Just wash it well and roughly chop it. The skin gets strained out with the pulp, so peeling is an extra step you can skip.

When should I take a ginger shot?

I like taking ginger shots first thing in the morning. It makes for a great way to kick off the day! If you forget, that’s fine. You can take a ginger shot any time of day.

What else can you add to wellness shots?

If you’re looking to make your own concoction, use bold ingredients that pack a lot of flavor into a small sip. Some of my favorite ingredients to add to wellness shots include lime juice, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, spinach, grapefruit, fresh mint, and wheatgrass.
