These are my favorite easy 4th of July recipes, and most of them come straight from the way my family actually celebrates.

Every year we head to Montana for the Fourth, gathering at a lake house my grandfather bought way back in 1947, and it’s about as close to home as I can ever possibly feel.

We divvy up meal nights and go potluck style on the 4th. It’s a weekend full of food, lake swimming, tons of fun, and lots of fireworks (and lots of kids [safely] doing lots of fireworks and sneaking extra treats).

If you’re hosting or contributing to a Fourth of July gathering, these are the dishes I come back to again and again. They’re easy, crowd-pleasing, and make the whole weekend more delicious. Here are my favorites:

4th of July Flag Cake with Whipped Cream
