Here are some fun do-it-yourself (DIY) beauty products to try. They’re fun and easy to make, and also make great birthday, shower or just-because gifts – except for maybe the acne mask. 🙂 That’s just for emergencies.

The Cold-Fighting Ear Oil isn’t really a beauty product, but I wanted to include it here for anyone that wants to try it. This old Ayurvedic remedy goes in your ears and works wonders for sore throats and dry sinuses. It may sound odd, but trust me, it works!

I use organic grape seed oil in the body products mostly because it’s healthy and a good price (and often times can be found at bulk stores like Costco) but almond oil and sesame oil (not the toasted kind) will work great, too. Look for organic ingredients for these products whenever possible.

Note of caution: These do-it-yourself products are not preserved. In most cases, use immediately and do not store. If you do store them, be careful not to let bacteria into the bottles (keep your fingers out/away and lids on tight) and don’t keep them around for extended periods of time.

Clear Skin Acne Mask

The baking soda will dry out oily skin and acne blemishes, and the honey makes the mask more gentle on the skin and yummy smelling.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda (not baking powder)
  • 1-2 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon raw organic honey

Instructions:
Mix ingredients well into a paste and immediately apply to skin as a mask or spot treatment. Leave on 5-20 minutes, depending on how your skin feels. The first time you do this you may want to only do 5 minutes. Gently apply, don’t scrub. Use immediately, do not store.

Relaxing Lavender Massage Oil

Lavender is know for its relaxing properties and its aroma has been used as a sleep aid for centuries. It’s also naturally antiseptic, so you can apply a small amount of this oil to minor scrapes for faster healing. (Think paper cuts, not gashes.) It’s antiseptic properties will also keep it fresh for a few months, but keep it in a dry place and keep your fingers and bacteria out of the bottle.

Use this DIY oil for an overall moisturizer before bed to relax, or to give your significant other the best neck and shoulder massage ever, just be sure to ask for one in return.

Ingredients:

  • 4oz organic grape seed or almond oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops chamomile essential oil

Instructions:
Mix all ingredients in a glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid and let sit at least 12 hours. Shake before using each time. You can find pretty, inexpensive glass bottles with lids at your local craft store for around a dollar. Clean the container with hot soapy water before using. These measurements are flexible and can be adjusted to your preferred scent level. Not for your face.

Use as a massage oil, or add 2-3tbsp to a hot bath for silky smooth skin.

This oil makes a lovely gift for birthdays, showers, or just because.

This body scrub will give your arms and legs a beaming glow before a night out.

One Ingredient Wonder: Pure Organic Coconut Oil

Pure unrefined extra virgin coconut oil (aka coconut butter) is incredibly nutritious and can be used for just about anything in your beauty routine. Buy two separate jars and use one for cooking and one for beauty to keep things sanitary. It already smells heavenly, so no need to mix it with anything. The nutrients in pure organic coconut oil do wonders for your skin and hair.

  • All over moisturizer, face and body
  • Hair conditioner
  • Cuticle oil
  • Lip balm
  • Shaving oil – but only use it with disposable razors because it clogs them up little

Cold-Fighting Ear Oil

This ear oil works wonders for both ear infections and colds. Garlic has been used for centuries for its medical properties. Ear oil can help clear up a mild ear infections, and helps relieve post-nasal drip and dry sinuses.

Ear oil can be found at your local health food store in a sanitary dropper bottle for less than $10. If you’re ever in a pinch and have the ingredients you can make your own, just make a small amount as it shouldn’t be stored. It’s important to use the exact ingredients below, don’t make any substitutions.

Ingredients:

  • 5 tbsp organic olive oil
  • 1 large fresh garlic clove, skin removed and smashed

Instructions: Heat the olive oil and garlic in a stainless steel (or cast iron) pan over medium-low heat for 10 minutes. Remove the garlic and let cool about 5-10 minutes until you can pour it on your wrist and it feels lightly warm but not too warm or hot. Pour the oil into a dropper or spoon. Lay on your right side and drop 4-5 drops of the oil into the left ear. Put the cotton ball in the ear opening to hold the oil in and stay on your side one minute. Repeat on the other side. Leave the cotton in both ears for 30 minutes to hold the oil in. Caution: Be very careful to not pour hot oil into the ear. It should be slightly warm but not hot. Also, this advice isn’t meant to replace that of your medical doctor. Consult before using.

Healthy Body Detoxing Bath

The epsom salts will draw impurities out of your body, and baking soda neutralizes acids on the skin and dissolves oil and perspiration. How does the salt draw impurities from the body? They pull salt out of the body through your pores, and bring toxins and impurities with it.

  • 2 cups epsom salts
  • 2 cups baking soda (not baking powder)
  • 5-10 drops your favorite essential oil, optional

Add ingredients to a full, warm/hot bathtub and soak for 20 minutes. Most skin experts say to soak for 20 minutes to allow the epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) to pull the toxins from your body, but not more than 20 minutes as you chance re-absorbing the impurities. Don’t add bath oil to this bath, it will prevent the other ingredients from working their magic.

Enjoy!
