This easy Angel Hair Pasta with Garlic & Lemon is a true testament to how a few simple, fresh ingredients can make a delicious stand-out dish.
Angel hair pasta is my go-to personal comfort food. It’s super easy to make (the entire dish only takes 10-15 minutes) and uses mostly pantry staples I always have on hand. When I want something quick and comforting but still kind of light, this is it!
The garlic, fresh lemon juice, and herbs boost the antioxidant power of this dish, while the good fats in the extra virgin olive oil help you absorb all of those fat-soluble vitamins.
FYI: Angel hair pasta is also called capellini. Super thin pasta like this is perfect for light sauces like butter or olive oil with garlic, a fresh grated tomato sauce, or a light cream sauce.
Avoid a heavy meat sauce with angel hair because it will weigh it down. Angel hair is often served on the side of a bigger dish, adding a nice, easygoing touch to your meal. It’s all about keeping things light and tasty without a lot of fuss.

What You’ll Need To Make Angel Hair Pasta with Garlic & Lemon:
- Angel hair (capellini) pasta (8 ounces, usually 1/2 of a standard 1lb package in the US)
- Extra-virgin olive oil (2 tablespoons). I like to use half extra-virgin olive oil and half grass-fed butter to add silkiness and flavor to the sauce, but you can use all olive oil or all butter if you prefer.
- Butter (2 tablespoons); I prefer grass-fed
- Fresh garlic (about 3 cloves), pressed, grated or minced
- 1 Large Lemon (you’ll use the zest and juice); always use fresh lemon juice!
- Grated Parmesan cheese (1/2 cup, plus for garnish); the freshly grated real stuff is best
- Optional: Cherry tomatoes or Grape tomatoes, halved (about 1 cup); the tomatoes are optional but nice to throw in if you have them
- Optional: Fresh herbs if you have any (e.g., basil, parsley, and chives), or dried herbs (Italian seasoning or a combo of dried herbs)
- Kosher salt or fine-grain sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
How Long to Cook Angel Hair Pasta
Angel hair pasta cooks very fast, usually in just 2 to 3 minutes, so don’t put it in the pot then walk away for a long time.
Must-Know Tips:
- Prepare the sauce in a large skillet (high-sided if you have one) before cooking the pasta, so the cooked pasta has somewhere to go.
- Keep at least 2 cups of the pasta cooking water to make the sauce.
- Prep your ingredients before you start cooking. Slice the tomatoes in half, mince the garlic, zest and juice the lemon and grate the cheese.

How to Make It:
- Boil water: Put a large pot of salted water on the stove and bring it to a boil. While you wait for it to boil, make the sauce in a large skillet or saute pan.
- Cook Garlic and Tomatoes: Over medium heat, heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet or saute pan big enough to hold all of the pasta. Add tomatoes (if using) and a big pinch of salt. Cook 3-4 minutes until the tomatoes start to give off some of their red color to the oil. Add minced garlic, cook 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Prep the Sauce: Turn the heat to low. Remove the tomatoes to a plate to use as a topping (leaving as much garlic and oil in the pan as you can) and set aside. Add the lemon zest, 1 teaspoon of salt and a generous amount of freshly grated black pepper (at least 1/2 teaspoon) to the oil and stir.
- Drop the pasta: The water should be boiling by now. Drop the pasta and set a timer for the cooking time on the package, usually 2-3 minutes. Get a large mug or 2-cup measuring cup out to reserve some pasta water.
- Combine: Carefully add cooked pasta to the sauce with 1/2 cup of pasta water (and save the pasta water to make more sauce). Mix the sauce through the pasta with tongs, adding more water a few tablespoons at a time as needed. Turn off the heat.
- Mix in: Mix in the fresh lemon juice, parmesan cheese, and herbs. Toss to combine, adding more pasta water if needed.
- Serve: Serve on a large plate or low bowl and top with reserved cooked tomatoes. Add more cheese or herbs if you like.
Tips & Variations
- Make it Creamy – Add a splash of heavy cream or a spoonful of ricotta for a richer texture.
- Add Protein – Top with grilled chicken, shrimp, or sautéed veggies.
- Spice It Up – Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or Calabrian chilis when you add the garlic for a little heat.
- Swap the Pasta – For a healthier twist, swap in whole wheat or gluten-free pasta.

Storage
- Refrigerate leftovers, covered, for up to 3 days.
- This is one of the few thin pastas that actually holds up well, and the reason is the sauce. Olive oil and butter coat each strand and keep it from turning gluey the way a cream sauce or a heavy tomato sauce would.
- To reheat, warm it in a skillet over medium-low with a splash of water or olive oil to loosen the sauce, tossing just until heated through.
- I don’t recommend freezing this one. Angel hair is too delicate to come back from a thaw.
Enjoy!

Description
This easy Angel Hair Pasta with Garlic and Lemon comes together in 15 minutes with a handful of fresh ingredients. Delicate capellini gets tossed in a silky garlic butter and olive oil sauce brightened with lemon zest, fresh lemon juice, and Parmesan. It works as a light weeknight dinner or an easy side dish alongside chicken or fish. I wrote this recipe for 2 (large) servings; double it if needed.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces Angel hair (capellini) pasta (usually 1/2 box of pasta in the US)
- 2 tablespoons Extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter (or more olive oil)
- 3 cloves fresh garlic, pressed, minced or grated
- 1 cup (8 ounces) cherry or grape tomatoes, halved
- 1 lemon (for zest and juice)
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, (plus more for garnish)
- Optional: fresh herbs (basil, parsley, or chives) or dried Italian seasoning
- Kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Boil the water: Put a large pot of salted water on the stove and bring it to a boil.
Add minced garlic and cook 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Prep the Sauce: Turn the heat to low. Remove the tomatoes to a plate to use as a topping (leaving as much garlic and oil in the pan as you can) and set aside. Add the lemon zest, 1 teaspoon of salt, and a generous amount of freshly ground black pepper (at least 1/2 teaspoon) to the oil and stir. Add another tablespoon of oil if the pan looks dry (you will also add pasta cooking water to make the sauce).
- Drop the pasta: the water should be boiling by now. Drop the pasta and set a timer for the cooking time on the package, usually 2-3 minutes. Reserve at least 2 cups of pasta water before draining.
- Combine: Add the cooked pasta to the sauce with 1/2 cup of pasta water (and save the rest of the pasta water to make more sauce). Mix the sauce through the pasta with tongs, adding more water a few tablespoons at a time as needed. Turn off the heat.
- Finish the sauce: Mix in the fresh lemon juice, parmesan cheese, and herbs. Toss to combine, adding more pasta water if needed.
- Serve: Serve on a large plate or in a low bowl and top with the reserved tomatoes. Add more cheese or herbs if you like.
Notes
Storage: Refrigerate leftover angel hair pasta, covered, for up to 3 days.
Reheating: Warm gently in a skillet over medium-low with a splash of water or olive oil to loosen the sauce. Toss just until heated through.
Freezing: Not recommended. Angel hair is too delicate to freeze and thaw well.
