How To Make 3 Cups Of Spinach Taste Like Candy

If you’ve visited my blog before or follow me on Facebook you know that I love my green smoothies.

Today I have a (naturally) sweet and delicious green smoothie recipe that tastes so good you won’t even notice that you’re filling your belly with three cups of dark leafy greens. Spinach is a true superfood and is packed with a ton of essential nutrients that your body needs to thrive. It’s also mostly water, making this smoothie extra hydrating.

All of the ingredients in this smoothie are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, good fats and fiber–feel free to drink up guilt-free. Unlike candy, which is ruining your health and you should stop eating.

Banana-Pineapple “Candy” Green Smoothie Recipe

Makes 1 large serving.
Use organic ingredients whenever possible.

  • 3 cups baby spinach (about 3 large handfuls)
  • 1 cup freshly cut pineapple flesh
  • 1 small ripe banana, peeled
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon raw, virgin coconut oil (aka coconut butter)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 cup purified water
  • 1 cup ice (about 10 ice cubes)

Method: Wash all produce thoroughly and prepare it for the blender. Blend all ingredients starting on low working your way up to high until well blended, about 45-60 seconds total.

Optional: Add 5-10 drops liquid stevia if needed for more sweetness.

The pineapple and banana make this smoothie deliciously sweet; if your sweet tooth is extra strong add a few drops of liquid pure stevia to sweeten even more. Also, the lime adds a great tart flavor, but if you don’t dig tart flavor leave it out. You can also substitute 2 tablespoons of avocado for the coconut oil if you don’t have any on hand.

Green smoothies are best when served immediately but can be stored in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator up to 12 hours. Fill the container to the top and seal tightly to minimize air exposure.

The ingredient measurements in green smoothies are flexible, add more or less of any ingredients to your taste. Learn how to build the perfect green smoothie here.

Why are you adding fat with the coconut oil ? I understand the chia seeds add omega 3 and 6, but does your body really need the fat from the coconut oil? Should I be using coconut?

Great question! The chia has a small amount of fat, but a little more is needed to absorb all of the fat-soluble nutrients in the smoothie. 1 teaspoon raw, virgin coconut oil is great for nutrition, texture and flavor in the smoothie.

I love this, I also have done a variation with a mint leaf or two instead of lime. Yum

Do you think that I can substitute frozen mango for the pineapple? Also, what kind of blender do you use?

I haven’t tried it with mango but I think it would be good – smoothie making is all about trial and error 🙂 I use a vitamix; any high-speed blender will work.

I’m not a big fan of using Stevia, would a little raw honey give it more of a sweet taste?
