Activated Charcoal Green Smoothie Recipe

This Activated Charcoal Green Smoothie Recipe combines the fresh flavors of your favorite fruit smoothie with the amazing benefits of charcoal for the ultimate detox smoothie recipe.

After indulging just a little (okay, a lot) over the holiday season, I always find myself looking for delicious detox recipes in January. Anyone else?

Maybe it’s the tryptophan in the roast turkey or the sugar crash from devouring countless Christmas cookies, but come New Year’s Day this girl is ready for a break.

Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying all the sweets and treats your heart desires.

I just tend to feel like my body is begging me to feed it some nutrients after a month of going ham (literally) on all that holiday goodness.

That brings us to the reason for this post, my all-time favorite Activated Charcoal Detoxing Green Smoothie.

Packed with good-for-you ingredients that your body will love as much as your brain does, this yummy detox smoothie is the ultimate guilt-free treat.

This activated charcoal green smoothie recipe features blueberries, banana, coconut water, romaine lettuce, lime juice, and activated charcoal powder.

It’s super easy to make, beyond refreshing, and seriously delicious.

At this point, you might be asking your computer screen: “Elizabeth, why would I put charcoal in a smoothie?”

If you’re not already a proud member of the activated charcoal bandwagon, I can see why this might seem strange.

Activated charcoal is the ultimate detoxifier.

That’s right! Activated charcoal binds to toxins and chemicals in our digestive systems to help them make their way out of our bodies faster.

Because of these amazing binding properties, activated charcoal is a fantastic digestion aid and has quickly become my secret weapon for transforming my favorite smoothie recipes into the ultimate detox smoothies. (Oh hello, Activated Charcoal Smoothie!)

If you’re looking for a healthy and utterly delicious way of cleansing your gut, then this Activated Charcoal Green Smoothie is the recipe for you. Now, onto the good stuff.

Ultimate Detox Smoothie Ingredients

This green smoothie recipe is bursting with wholesome ingredients that also happen to be excellent detoxifiers. Here is everything you need to make this Activated Charcoal Green Smoothie:

  • Activated charcoal powder: As you might have guessed, activated charcoal is the star of today’s show. This amazing detoxifier is great for ridding our bodies of chemicals and toxins and can be found in the supplement section of most grocery stores.
  • Frozen blueberries: Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants that help repair any oxidative damage in our bodies, and just like activated charcoal, they help draw out toxins.
  • Frozen bananas: Not only do bananas make for an ultra-creamy smoothie, but they also support gut health and detoxification by cleaning up our intestines. As an added bonus, bananas are a terrific source of fiber.
  • Coconut water: Coconut water is one of my go-to liquids for smoothies. Not only is it low in calories and virtually fat-free, but it is full of potassium, which helps to flush any unwanted substances from your body. Coconut water is also a natural electrolyte, making it great for hydration. You can also use plain filtered water if you don’t have any coconut water.
  • Romaine lettuce: Hello, daily dose of greens! I love making Activated Charcoal Green Smoothies because they are a delicious (and sneaky!) way of adding some extra greens to your daily routine. Feel free to swap spinach or kale here if you want.
  • Lime juice: A generous squeeze of fresh lime juice brightens up this smoothie with refreshing zest. It’s also known to help aid digestion by stimulating the digestion secretions in your stomach.

How to Make an Activated Charcoal Green Smoothie

All you need to make this delicious detox smoothie recipe is a blender, a few basic ingredients, and a few minutes of your time. You can for sure just blend all of the ingredients together to make this even faster, but I like to create this layered look to make it pretty. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. In a blender, blend activated charcoal, blueberries, half of a banana, and ¼ cup coconut water. If the mixture is too thick, feel free to add more coconut water. Pour the charcoal mixture into two glasses and place them in the freezer.
  2. Wash out the blender, then add romaine lettuce, lime juice, the other half of the banana, and ¼ cup coconut water. Just like the charcoal mixture, feel free to add more coconut water if the mixture is too thick. Blend until smooth.
  3. Pour the green layer over the charcoal layer and serve.

Again, if you’re running low on time and don’t care to separate the smoothie into layers, feel free to blend all the ingredients together instead—it will look a little brown from mixing all of the colors together, but it’s still just as healthy!

Smoothie Recipe Tips and Tricks

Detox smoothies are incredibly tasty, great for digestion, and leave you feeling energized and refreshed. Clearly, I’m a fan.

Here are my top tips and tricks for making the ultimate detox smoothie:

  • Use frozen fruit. Looking for that extra thick and creamy smoothie you see on all the blogs? You’re going to want to opt for frozen fruit. Frozen fruit gives your smoothie a thick, creamy texture while using fresh fruit will result in a thinner consistency. If you are really keen on using fresh fruit, I recommend tossing in some ice cubes. Just be wary that the ice will dilute the smoothie’s flavor.
  • Sneak in extra greens. While the idea of adding leafy greens to a fruit smoothie isn’t exactly enticing to some people, you truly can’t taste romaine or spinach when blended with fruit and the addition goes a long way in sneaking in tons of extra nutrients to keep you feeling great.
  • Add some layers. While making this smoothie in two separate layers is totally optional, it certainly makes for an eye-catching display (and they do say we eat with our eyes first…). Trust me, if you’re going for a photo-worthy smoothie, that extra step is going to be well worth it.

Activated Charcoal Green Smoothie Storage Tips

Because this smoothie only takes a few minutes of your time, I highly recommend serving it fresh. However, life happens, and if you get stuck having to store your leftovers, it’s not a big deal.

The key to successfully storing smoothies is preventing oxidation. Make sure to store your leftovers in a glass container with an airtight lid. Personally, I love using mason jars to store my smoothies.

Pour your smoothie all the way to the top of the jar (this way, there won’t be any air left to oxidize). Then, you can seal it and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about this detox green smoothie recipe:

My smoothie is too thick! How do I make it thinner?

If you need to thin out your smoothie, start by adding small amounts of coconut water or regular tap water.

Then, blend your smoothie for about 10-20 seconds, and repeat until you’ve reached your desired thickness (or thinness, in this case).

My smoothie is too thin! How do I make it thicker?

The first secret to achieving a thick smoothie is using frozen fruit. However, if you’ve already used fresh fruit, try adding some ice cubes, a dollop of Greek yogurt or coconut yogurt, or some nut butter.

Blend your smoothie for another 10-20 seconds, and repeat until you’ve reached your desired consistency.

What does activated charcoal do in smoothies?

Once ingested, activated charcoal traps toxins in your gut, preventing your body from absorbing them. However, activated charcoal is incredibly good at its job!

Therefore, I don’t recommend drinking this smoothie within 90 minutes of eating a nutritious meal, as the charcoal could also prevent the absorption of essential nutrients.

What does activated charcoal taste like?

Activated charcoal doesn’t really taste like anything, making it the ideal addition to just about any smoothie recipe.
